These 10 Countries Offer Long Term Visas for Digital Nomads!

Good news nomads and aspiring nomads of the world!  

There are a number of countries with a “digital nomad visa” to live long term in a country you love. This way you don’t have to bother with border runs or abandoning a city you’re crazy about after 60 to 90 days on a tourist visa. 

These visas are digital nomad-friendly as they range in various resident opportunities for freelancers, entrepreneurs and remote workers

We have compiled below a list of some incredible countries that offer this currently or are soon to offer it.

Czech Republic – Self-Employed Visa

Kicking off the list is Czech Republic, which allows digital nomads to stay for a year as a self-employed person. 

The visa can even be extended for another two years, which is amazing news for digital nomads who enjoy long-term expatratiation.

Visa requirements include:

• Proof of income being at least 15000 kč a month (560 euros)
• Pay a monthly social tax of 1800 Kč (67 euros).
• Proof of long term accommodation
• Proof of health insurance

For nomads seeking a low cost of living in a European country filled with timeless beauty, the Czech Republic’s long-term stay visa is one of your best options.

Mexico – Temporary Resident Visa

Mexico has one the most accommodating long term visa plans for digital nomads on this list, as you don’t need to be self-employed or have a business to reside there! 

As long as you can prove that you have a monthly income of at least $1620 USD, you can stay for one year in Mexico with their temporary resident visa. 

The visa can then be renewed for up to three years. Paying a tax is not required as long as you would not be a domicile resident. 

This is a pretty amazing deal which is why the expat scene is very lively, from big city expat hubs like Mexico City to smaller beach towns like Isla Mujeres. 

Estonia – Digital Nomad Visa *Pending!*

This is still in the works, but keep an eye out for Estonia’s digital nomad visa, which was originally set to launch in 2019. 

Estonia does however currently have an e-resident program for nomads who want to set-up a business in the EU and manage it online, so we can at least trust that they are one of the most proactive countries in the world catering to nomads. 

Spain – Self-Employed Visa

Spain is another country that offers a self-employed visa for digital nomads, whether you are a freelancer or have a business. 

The visa, which is called the Non-Lucrative visa or Autónomo, allows you to remain in Spain for up to one year. It can then be renewed two years. 

Visa requirements include:

• Proof of annual income of at least 26,000 euros per year.
• Proof of health insurance
• Background check
• 35% corporate tax fee

Whether you settle in a bigger city like Madrid and Barcelona, or beach retreats like Marbella or Tenerife, Spain is one of the best European bases for digital nomads.

Georgia – Remote Work Visa

Georgia just launched their “Remotely from Georgia” program. It allows remote workers and entrepreneurs the ability to reside in Georgia for 6 months to a year.

Requirements for this are:

• $2000 USD monthly income
• Proof of health insurance for the duration of stay
• No income tax payment

Like Mexico’s visa, this is another flexible and affordable option. For those who love traveling to the less marketed destinations of Europe, Georgia’s natural beauty and inviting locals will be right up your alley. 

Croatia – Digital Nomad Visa *Pending!*

Like Estonia, Croatia too has plans to launch a long term stay visa for those who have the financial means to support themselves living in the country. 

Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic announced in August via Twitter that the country is modifying their Aliens Act to allow foreigners to stay long term. 

The amendment for the Aliens Act has to be approved by a majority in Parliament first, so we are still waiting to see how this unfolds.  

Barbados – Digital Nomad Visa

Barbados just launched in July their 12-Month Barbados Welcome Stamp Visa for remote workers. 

In order to qualify, you have to:

• Prove that you earn $50,000 a year, and/or prove that you have the financial means to support yourself every month. 
• Maintain health insurance.
• Tax is exempted.

If living on a little Carribean island paradise is your idea of expatriation, then Barbados is a unique and new option for nomads.

Germany – Freelance & Artist Visa

Germany has been a longstanding hotspot for digital nomads with their artist visa and freelance visa option known as Freiberufler.

For the artist visa, which is limited to residency in Berlin, a case manager must approve you for the visa. You can be an artist of any kind, from a painter to a  designer to a musician. 

For the freelance visa, you can work independently as a freelancer in Germany. But there’s a catch: your profession must be acknowledged in German as liberal (Freibe Berufe) and not commercial (gewerbe), otherwise your profession will disqualify you. 

There is a 14% base rate income tax that must be paid on a quarterly basis for freelancers, although those making less than €9,169 are exempt from the income tax. Health insurance is also mandatory.

Here is a list of professions categorized as liberal:

• Healthcare
• Law 
• Tax and business counseling
• Scientific/technical
• Linguistic and information-transmitting

As you can see, that is a very small list. 

So if one of those is your profession, then congratulations. You’re Germany approved!

Bermuda – Digital Nomad Visa

Just like Barbados, Bermuda also has a 12-month visa for nomads who would like to remote work from the island. 

The cost is $263 USD and you must do the following:

• Pass a background check.
• Have valid health insurance.
• Show proof of employment.
• Show you have the monthly means and/or a continuous source income.

Bermuda is another Caribbean option that is a little bit cheaper as well.

Portugal – Digital Nomad Visa

Portugal has a unique visa called the D7 Passive Income visa.

In order to be approved for this, you must show proof that you have sufficient funds to maintain residence in the country, which can be demonstrated with:

• intellectual property
• transferable equity
• real estate
• financial investments

The visa is valid for a year and afterwards can be extended for two more years at a time, with little to no taxes to be paid. 

After five years in Portugal with this visa, you can apply for residency so long as you pass a language test. 

The colorful capital city of Lisbon has a very active expat community, making Portugal an exciting option for you
